The Best Months to Get Married in New York

When it comes to the best months to get married in New York, it’s down to your vision and priorities. Maybe you’re picturing an outdoor affair beneath an elegant sailcloth tent. Or, you want to take advantage of New York’s beautiful fall foliage! Either way, your vision is what matters most. And, as your wedding planner, my job is to bring your vision to life!

However, there are hurdles to overcome no matter what season you choose to get hitched. The best way to make an informed choice is to compare each season’s pros and cons and determine your priorities accordingly. So, here’s the lowdown on seasonal weddings in New York—and the best months to get married based on your unique vision!

New York “Peak” Wedding Season

The most popular months to get married in New York are May through October. The weather is at its prime, with long sunny days and beautiful cool evenings. Of course, this also means that venues book up quickly! In particular, an open Saturday can be hard to come by. So, if you’re planning a wedding in New York anytime from May to October, it’s best to book your venue ASAP. Based on the weddings I plan, I’ve noticed that the most popular months are June, July, September, and October.

The Best Months to Get Married

…for Fall Foliage

For peak fall foliage, October is the way to go. However, fall weddings are popular in New York and the Hudson Valley—dates go quickly, so book as soon as possible!

…for an Outdoor Ceremony and Tented Reception

For a beachside ceremony, a tented reception, or simply an outdoor affair, then June, July, and early September are your best bets. The weather will be warm, but not too hot. Plus, if you’re waterside, you can take advantage of the cooling coastal breeze!

…for an Outdoor Ceremony and Indoor Reception

For an outdoor ceremony but indoor cocktail hour and reception, April, May, September, and October are the best months to get married. With these months, you’ll avoid extreme heat or cold for a comfortable ceremony. At the same time, the chilly evenings are perfect for getting cozy indoors!

Months to Avoid

I recommend that my couples avoid an August wedding if they can. It’s just so hot and humid! Even if you’re planning an indoor wedding, you’ll likely want most of your portraits to take place outside. One hour of pictures might not sound like much, but buried beneath layers of tulle (or buttoned into a wool suit), you’ll overheat fast!

I also advise caution when planning a winter wedding. Upstate New York and Western New York receive lots of snow each winter, which results in accumulated ice on the roads. So, if you’re envisioning a winter wonderland-themed celebration, you’ll need a backup plan.

It’s a good idea to plan a three-day event over the entire weekend. That way, guests are in the area early in case of inclement weather. I also suggest planning your ceremony and reception at the same venue, so travel isn’t required in-between events. You don’t want an unexpected snowfall to delay your reception indefinitely!

Planning a Wedding in NYC

No matter what time of year you choose to get married, be careful when planning a wedding in NYC! In a city this big, there are multiple major events per year to work around. For example, Spring and Summer New York Fashion Week take place in Bryant Park in Mid-September. So, it’s best to avoid planning your wedding in that area at that time. In addition, summer in the city fills up fast with outdoor concerts and events. Always have an eye on the city calendar when planning!

The Bottom Line

We all know Mother Nature is unpredictable. Even the best months to get married come with a bit of risk—especially if you’re planning an outdoor affair! However, with a solid backup plan, there’s no need for disappointment. With all my couples, I ensure that I’m prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at us!
